Tonya turned in one quick swirl and disappeared down the steps to the beach in front of Sea Breeze.

I sighed with relief that she’d gone from our peaceful bubble.

Rose looked cool and unperturbed as usual.

Luke scratched Pip’s ears until she moaned in ecstasy. She had a good time no matter what happened around her.

“Where’d you find the bubbles?” Rose asked. I thought that was the least important question she could have asked, considering Tonya’s recent accusations about a cover-up.

Luke pulled out the wand and blew more bubbles while explaining the mystery appearance. “Pip found the bottle when it rolled out from under the passenger seat of the MG. With Tonya’s doom and gloom face, I decided we needed a bit of distraction, and Pip was more than happy to cooperate. Right, Pipsqueak?”

Pip licked Luke’s hand, and watched them float toward the bay. She must have had enough soap taste for one day. I screwed the top on and dropped the bottle of bubbles in my bag for another day.

“Rose?” I wasn’t swayed by her change of focus away from Tonya. “Did you really tell AJ about the ring and Tom’s father’s death or was that a big bluff?”

“Of course, I told him. I’m a strong believer in addressing something head-on.”

“Huh. You could have fooled me. That must be your rule that doesn’t apply when it comes to informing me of something important.” I crossed my arms and pouted. I was still angry that Rose hadn’t told me the truth about her mother’s ring. “When did you figure out that Ivy wasn’t who she pretended to be after she first arrived here yesterday morning?”

Rose adjusted her sunglasses. “You’re right, Dani. I wasn’t fair to you. I knew who Ivy was the minute I laid eyes on that pasty white face of hers covered with freckles and a snarky grin. But I thought it was best to play along so I could figure out what deceit she was up to. So, once you left for the diner, I confronted her. She didn’t like it too much, knowing that I’d seen through her charade, so she took off to the beach. I assumed it would be the last I’d see of her.”

“Well, it was, wasn’t it?” I wouldn’t let anything slide.

“Poor choice of words. It was the last I saw of her while she was alive, but you’re right again. She’s still causing trouble. And that’s why I told AJ about this ring. Do you think he won’t believe my version when no one else was here to contradict what happened?”

“Except, Ivy didn’t give it you. I found it in her bag.”

Rose flicked her wrist dismissively. “A small detail.”

I poured two cups of tea to give myself time to cool off and handed one to Luke.

“What about her phone?” I kept my eye on Rose’s expression, determined to find out everything she might have withheld from me. “I have a terrible feeling that you know something about that too, after all these other deceptions.
