Tonya turned in one quick swirl and disappeared down the steps to the beach in front of Sea Breeze.
I sighed with relief that sheâd gone from our peaceful bubble.
Rose looked cool and unperturbed as usual.
Luke scratched Pipâs ears until she moaned in ecstasy. She had a good time no matter what happened around her.
âWhereâd you find the bubbles?â Rose asked. I thought that was the least important question she could have asked, considering Tonyaâs recent accusations about a cover-up.
Luke pulled out the wand and blew more bubbles while explaining the mystery appearance. âPip found the bottle when it rolled out from under the passenger seat of the MG. With Tonyaâs doom and gloom face, I decided we needed a bit of distraction, and Pip was more than happy to cooperate. Right, Pipsqueak?â
Pip licked Lukeâs hand, and watched them float toward the bay. She must have had enough soap taste for one day. I screwed the top on and dropped the bottle of bubbles in my bag for another day.
âRose?â I wasnât swayed by her change of focus away from Tonya. âDid you really tell AJ about the ring and Tomâs fatherâs death or was that a big bluff?â
âOf course, I told him. Iâm a strong believer in addressing something head-on.â
âHuh. You could have fooled me. That must be your rule that doesnât apply when it comes to informing me of something important.â I crossed my arms and pouted. I was still angry that Rose hadnât told me the truth about her motherâs ring. âWhen did you figure out that Ivy wasnât who she pretended to be after she first arrived here yesterday morning?â
Rose adjusted her sunglasses. âYouâre right, Dani. I wasnât fair to you. I knew who Ivy was the minute I laid eyes on that pasty white face of hers covered with freckles and a snarky grin. But I thought it was best to play along so I could figure out what deceit she was up to. So, once you left for the diner, I confronted her. She didnât like it too much, knowing that Iâd seen through her charade, so she took off to the beach. I assumed it would be the last Iâd see of her.â
âWell, it was, wasnât it?â I wouldnât let anything slide.
âPoor choice of words. It was the last I saw of her while she was alive, but youâre right again. Sheâs still causing trouble. And thatâs why I told AJ about this ring. Do you think he wonât believe my version when no one else was here to contradict what happened?â
âExcept, Ivy didnât give it you. I found it in her bag.â
Rose flicked her wrist dismissively. âA small detail.â
I poured two cups of tea to give myself time to cool off and handed one to Luke.
âWhat about her phone?â I kept my eye on Roseâs expression, determined to find out everything she might have withheld from me. âI have a terrible feeling that you know something about that too, after all these other deceptions.
